You are experiencing the challenges of lived experience and seeing the ways in which social structures mediate life chances. Even in its challenges there are opportunities to disrupt this reality. Be with the complications. Keep paying attention now now!
Response (23 May 2008)
We truly are experiencing challenges that are an eye opener to the struggles in which many people in the U.S. live in spite of each day. It is a shame that it took many of us to come all the way to South Africa in order to realize it.
From Natasha (22 May 2008)
Wow Crystle! That sounds tough. Your attitude is amazing!!

Dear Katie:
You are doing the really, really gut wrenching work. Do NOT give up. We here in the states and in Women's Studies are ready to help. You are amazing...all of you women. Keep the faith. Remember: Well behaved women rarely make history.

It was brought to my attn a few years ago that some believe in the myth that an HIV positive man can be cured by having sex with a virgin. Since the young ones can be presumed to be so, they are abused and infected. -- You hear anything along these lines?
Response (21 May 2008)
at Fezeka High School yesterday the group got to teach a Life Orientation class. it's like sex ed. the four of us were amazed at how many students believed that myth. scary almost. we totally dispelled it and gave them some great information to take home!
From Carolyn Lawrence (21 May 2008)

Capetown, South Africa - Preparations To Leave
This week seems to have flown by the quickest. My apologies for not blogging as much. I will still post entries when I get back in the states.

As we are preparing to say our goodbyes, I find myself to be a bit sad....I'm not ready to leave. I only find comfort in kowing that I have accomplished what I promised I would do at my first meeting with my organization. But I still wish I had more time to do more....In South Africa, you can ALWAYS do more. And while I know that I have done alot, I want to do more.

I am torn...how am I suppose to adjust to the mentality of the states after being here. I came to South Africa a socio-economically concious women....but nothing could have ever prepared me for what I experienced here. After working here three weeks, I would have never expected my experience and exposure to drastically affect my life...the way i think, look at things, love, and believe.

I am leaving South Africa....with the awareness of a concious consumer, a person who considers the benefits of labourers.

I dont know how to explain what I recieved...but I do know that life deals you things for a reason. My trip here was definitely not just an academic course, it was a trip that taught me about life!

Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrica!

Shamika L.
