Kathy and Sharon... round the world! 20 Aug 2005 - 14 Oct 2006

Well we've finally done it, we've stopped talking about travelling & actually started our trip round the world! The plan is to fly as few times as possible, so we began by taking the train & then picked up some trucks, buses, bikes, cars & boats...

Hi! Happy to help, send us an email at KandSrtw@gmail.com and we will get back to you. Good that you have nothing booked - makes it easier to change your plans! We will dig out our various bits and bobs. Lonelyplanet on a shoestring was good for planning.

Hi Jill, thanks for your message. It's nice to hear we can inspire others to travel. Good luck with your travelling with hubby, Europe is great by train and bus - www.seat61.com is a really good tool for that kind of trip.

Glad u like reading about it! We used http://www.monkeys hrine.com who were worth their weight in gold. But I'm sure local agents can also help organise homestays. It was definitely a highlight. Russia is quite difficult so rec. using an agent/flatmates.ru

Day 530 - The Last Post
|
Yeah! After leaving 75 weeks* ago, we are finally back home! We may have been back in London since October but we weren't able to be home until now. It's time to finally unpack the rucksack & hang up the boots. We have also just past the 100,000 visitor mark - which we are staggered about. We're so glad so many people have got so much out of this diary. It seems an appropriate time to finish these posts on this round-the-world travelogue. Thanks to you all for following our travels and for staying in touch whilst we enjoyed our epic adventure. What a wonderful opportunity we have had, one we will always treasure. "Have you got it out of your system now?" is a question we frequently hear. To which we can simply answer, "It's like being served the most delicious, moist, tasty, chocolate-y, devine pudding that you have ever had. One that makes your eyes close, your knees go weak and your taste buds dance around. You wouldn't want a dessert like that every day of the week - but you can't wait for the next time you can have it again - even if its only a mouthful". So keep looking back for future travels as we will definitely keep a record of them here. For videos, hints and tips, and more detailed route maps visit KSrtw.com and feel free to keep sending us emails! Kathy & Sharon * that's 45 million seconds! |

Day 521 - Is it me?
|
It's been an interesting 100 days - re-entering "soceity" (or at least our "community") and I think we've done well. It's difficult. As you may remember when we first stepped onto UK soil we were spending our whole time doing constant comparisons as to what's changed from when we left. Marks & Spencers' green, Boots' font and ITV having yet more TV channels and rebranding their logos, etc. Locally new apartments have gone up, houses have had extentions and shops have changed ownership. People essentially haven't changed, although we definitely noticed a larger population speaking Polish - and even advertisements in Polish! Having had longer to reflect, there have been other changes that we can really notice having been away. Here's a selection: "Celebrity" TV programmes - yes they were around before but not to the extent they are now - every week there is a new programme being shown with so-called celebrities - none of whom we have heard of - and its not just on TV, its the constant coverage in the rest of the media that has become overwhelming. Sat Navs - driving along, you notice quite how many vehicles have a dashboard satnav system glaring back at them. Carbon dioxide and "Carbon Footprint": I can honestly say that we had never heard the term "Carbon Footprint" before we left. Yet on our return - everyone is talking about it, or referring to it. Don't get us wrong. It's a good thing - there was not one country we visited that hasn't noticed some kind of change in the climate - but the term "carbon footprint" wasn't being used before we left. PVR: sky plus was around before we left but the whole term PVR (personal video recorder) is new. Political parties: There seems to be much more coverage on the political parties than we remember in the first half of 2005 - and the debate is certainly more interesting than it has been for a few years! Blogs - is it me, or are there more blogs out there. Not just friends, or computer geeks but respected journalists and editors. Plasma/LCD TV's - everyone seems to have one. Obviously they haven't, but quite a few do - and its the main style available if you go into an electrical store. |

Day 520 - Some tips for travellers
|
We've been in London for 100 days now and we are still not quite home! We continue to receive lots of emails which is very nice. We are glad you still enjoy the website. We've decided to share our general hints and tips for anyone considering a similar round the world adventure. Check out the new section at our website www.KSrtw.com and also the new videos of South America. Our number one priority is to get back to home properly and unpack. But inevitably thoughts turn to future trips and we already have plans for some escapes this year. Watch this space! |

Day 473 - even more Top Fives
|
It's hard to not wake up and think, this time last year we were in .... or this time two months ago we were... but its inevitable! One way of coping is by meeting up with people we met whilst travelling, and we've been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to do that recently. Ph | | | | | |
