Explore the best of the winter sun in two popular travel destinations

After overindulging at Christmas now the excitement of New Year has waned, and on comes the anti-climax that is January. If making resolutions you have no intention of keeping, getting into shape and staying in town to turn over a new leaf doesn't inspire you with enthusiasm for 2012, why not break up the monotony of what is possibly the longest month, financially speaking and flee to warmer climes.

With many airlines and holiday providers having offered great deals from the end of December, make sure you look out for further reductions: as long as you're prepared to travel at short notice you could be jetting off to some of the most idyllic and far-flung destinations the brochures have to offer.

Australia

At the other end of the world, Australia in January and February offers everything that the cold and crisp UK doesn't; sun, sandy beaches, barbecues and a plethora of action sports to excite even the most uncoordinated of holidaymakers.

Sports enthusiasts should take one of the many flights to Australia and head to Melbourne in mid-late January to catch the Australian Open tennis grand slam, and the Etihad Stadium for a crash course in the rules and rivalries of the Australian Football League. For the best surfing, snorkeling and a varied choice of water sports, Perth in Western Australia cannot be beaten.

For the more traditional guidebook explorer, Australia boasts many famed attractions such as Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, the Sydney Opera House, and the Great Ocean Road; one of the most breathtaking stretches of highway in the world, 243 km of untouched road from Victoria to Queensland takes in numerous sights along the way including the 12 apostles.

Animal lovers will jump at the chance to visit the world-class zoos for a rare peek into the lives of indigenous species such as the marsupials: koala bear, kangaroo and wallabies.

The Caribbean

A lost paradise of crescent shaped islands situated between the Gulf of Mexico and South America, Caribbean holidays were viewed as once in a lifetime experiences by previous generations. However, with the accessibility of modern travel and the plethora of last-minute deals to be had, the regions of the Caribbean, Central and South America are more popular than ever.

With a multitude of cultural epicenters to discover, the most important decision when planning a trip to the Caribbean is how many islands you'll have time to visit. And then, there is the cuisine to consider. Prepare to feast upon local delicacies such as Caribbean stew which features goat meat, breadfruit, papaya, tomato and dumplings. Other world famous dishes are the traditional chicken, rice and peas followed by black or rum cake.

Jamaica is a must-see for any music fan: explore the birthplace of many popular musical styles such as ska, dancehall and dubstep to name but a few. For the ultimate reggae experience visit the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston. Notable natural attractions include Dunn River Falls, the Blue Lagoon and the Palisadoes; a thin tombolo of sand that serves as natural protection for Kingston Harbour.

For a different slice of culture, head to Cuba where you can expect balmy temperatures of 21 degrees C in January, bustling streets filled with 50s cars and a rich nightlife centered around good food, jazz, salsa music and rum cocktails. Authentic Cuban meals include popular ingredients such as plantain, black beans, rice, shredded beef, pork with onions and a selection of tropical fruits, with an added twist - all courses are served at the same time.

Heavily influenced by both Spain and Africa, there are many things to see and do in Cuba. Snorkel in the deep blue seas, and explore the essence of this soulful island in the capital, Havana. Visit the Cigar Museum, and take a walk around Old Havana: Plaza de Armas, Havana's oldest square is a must-see, as is El Templete, the city's oldest neo-classical building. Further afield in Santa Clara experience the 'Che pilgrimage' which takes in the memorial (where it is believed Che Guevara's remains are laid to rest), the mausoleum and museum complex.

Wherever you end up on your winter getaway, be prepared for the unexpected and start the New Year how you intend to continue it.
