Rainbow Beach, Australia

Hand feeding wild dolphins and hopefully a paraglide...

Again we decided to go a bit off the beaten path and give Hervey Bay and Fraser Island a skip. We have landed in a cute little place called Rainbow Beach. The main thing that drew us here is that we have decided to be very brave (or stupid) and go tandem paragliding. Unfortunately when we arrived the wind was not right and we have one more day before we need to get moving again. Here's holding thumbs we can do it this arvie.

Luckily this is a beautiful place and there is lots to see so even if we don't get to go paragliding we are pleased we came. Most of the area is in Cooloola National Park and we are off to see the Coloured Sands (rainbow-coloured sand dunes on the beach) if Andrew recovers from his serious foot injury (hhmm minor scrape) sufficiently to walk on the beach. There is also a 15-ha Blow (basically a sand dune a bit out of control and encroaching on the forest) which is pretty impressive along the coast.

This morning we got to hand feed wild Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins which have been coming to nearby Tin Can Bay for about 50 years to interact with humans. It all started when an injured dolphin was nursed back to recovery and fed at this point every morning. She just kept coming back and over the years, several members of the pod have kept the tradition alive. They are only given about 10% of their daily food requirement which means they are not dependant on the food & come back because they want to. It was a really special experience to be so close to these sensitive souls.

View our initial Rainbow Beach Pics here - more to follow...

We are off tomorrow to Brisbane to see our old flatties Geoff and Debs. They have 2 new additions to their family since we last saw them (2 year old twins) & a 3rd on the way so I think their lives will be a little different from their carefree London days.

Speak to you soon I'm sure...Cheesy
