Driving across the country

Up early with the howler monkey ‘alarm’ outside the window. We packed up the car and drank coffee like rocket fuel (I was trying to use it all up but it was too much). The coffee here is brewed by pouring water through a linen sock filter into the coffee pot- very simple but just as effective as a machine. We got in the car and headed out to the highway- the biggest road problem was actually getting out of our house- the road there is in an awful condition and we slipped on the gravel trying to get out onto the main drag. We soon got going and all was going good and then we turned down a road and a chavvy young man came over signaling- turns out he was pointing at the wheel (the tyre needed air) and we happened to be next to a guys house who had an air thingy in his back garden- he was a lovely older man and wouldn’t take any money for filling the air. Tico kindness strikes again…. We were in the car for around 9 hours in total- stopping for lunch back in Uvita- John has driven across the whole country now! We eventually made it to the airport Marriott- where this adventure began. We checked into our lovely rooms with HUGE beds and then Anne, R and I headed out to souvenir shop at a souvenir factory (it felt like the elves workshop) and brought bits and bobs. Afterwards R gave me a beautiful wooden necklace and earrings he had sneakily bought- it was our wooden wedding anniversary this year and by then he hadn’t found something he liked for me- but he found it here- what a surprise I had forgotten all about it! Very romantic hubby. When we were home we managed to fit all of our things we had bought over our trip into J&A’s bags which was a great relief for us- bliss to have lighter rucksacks at last. We all then went across the road to a Peruvian restaurant and had a gorgeous meal- cerviche (J&A’s new favourite thing), steak, pisco sours. It was a wonderful meal- reminiscing over a truly brilliant few weeks
