Back in Split
Hi Hi Everyone,
Ok now I am in a better mood and more ready to break Croatia down for you. The other day I was just fed right up with people. I was totally peopled out and zero patience so I didnt quite paint a lovely picture of Croatia!
Oops. I guess I can't be chipper Ash all the time! Right?!!?!?
Anywho---here is how it is. Hvar was absolutley amazing. It was another harbour town set around a pretty castle. But this town was different because all of the european jet setters have now found this little gem and it is becoming quite swanky. At night time and through out the day you can see huge yachts and sail boats coming in to the harbour...I mean these boats are unreal. I just sort of sat back and tried to get on one!!! haha, apparently it didnt happen!!!
I met a really great group of Aussies...as you do...and ended up having a great time in Hvar. We laughed a ton, ate, drank, and beached it. They really made my time lovely!
Yesterday I went with one of them named Matt on a scootie around the island. We settled in at one of the towns near by for a little afternoon lunch. It was so peaceful. A big storm was coming in so the water was choppy with big waves crashing against the rocks, the sun was setting and we were sitting right near the water...you could feel the water spraying and hitting us.
Just fantastic...picturesque...serene...all of those things wrapped in to one is how Hvar is.
Now, the reason I was feeling really down on Croatia is because it is just another different cultural experience. At first glance you think...oh it isnt that different. Mostly everyone speaks english, the food is similar and we all dress the same...(sort of). But the thing I was NOT remembering or rather understanding that less than 15 years ago Croatia was in a serious struggle for independance and there were a lot of bad things happening. Such as war, k*lling, hunger...everything like that. It seems that people (as told by a local) just took it in a different way---kind of all for themselves...but still trying to find humour in a gloomy situation. I also don't understand their 'black' humour. Anyway, so once I accepted that yes, every single person will rip you off...from the cab driver, mini mart lady, waiters, hotel owners, and even the 90 year old ladies in the market...I was ok with it.
It just takes some time to get used to. I am not sure if I would ever want to because I think it is sad...and not right. But hey, I never experienced what really went on in Croatia...so I really will never understand why the people are this way.
BUT, it isnt also to say that I havent met a ton of lovely people here---I just know---no matter how great they are---they will rip you off!!!!!!!
Tomorrow Leanne and I separate...I am off to Anacona, Italy. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH. I may head straight to Rome or stop in Florence for 3 days or so.
Life is just great. I am out of my travel funk---over the 2 month downer mark and ready to get on the road. In just about 2 weeks off to India.
Love you all and I hope this was a better blog than my grumpy self the other day!!!!! Oh yes, as soon as I get free internet in Rome there are WAY more pics to be had!!!!
