Last Day in Roma!
Well my week in Rome has just flown by. There are so many wonderful things to say about this city. Here you could spend weeks\months exploring because there is so much history and so many things to see. I have basically spent the week walking and walking and walking and walking some more!
Of course I went to the Vatican...which was an experience in itself. The Vatican museum was just overwhelming. It would take days and days to see all of the artwork here. But the biggies I did see...such as The Sistine Chapel...rooms of Raphael...etc. People can talk about the Sistine Chapel from photos and what not but what a feeling to walk in and be surrounded by some of the best art work in the world. The day that I went to the Vatican the Pope was giving a blessing outside of St. Peters Basilica. There were over 50000 people waiting to hear him speak. I kind of took the opportunity to avoid the massive crowd in the Vatican...but it didnt matter because there were still 1000s of people jammed in there.
I met a lovely couple from Brasil in the afternoon and we spent a couple of hours talking about world politics. Nothing like a political discussion in the worlds smallest country-The Vatican.
It would take me at least an hour to write all the places that I have seen. All that I know is that I am NOT done with Rome. Hopefully after India I will be back here to explore the city in a greater sense.
Staying with Marco has been wonderful. I have saved a lot of money and made a great friend. He works quite a lot so we have just gotten together in the evening for a chat and dinner. Last night he took me down to the center to meet his friends for pizza. This was my first Roman scootie experience. It was a bit frightening at the time BUT this morning he took me out for a tour around the city in the scootie. OMG, crazy town. It was so funny I was on the back have a panic attack and he was just humy dum la la this is normal. It is basically each to their own a fight to beat traffic. It is really something to see 1,2,3,4... scooties take on a bus because the funny thing is that the scooties win!!!! Crazy drivers.
I just about forgot to mention the Colosseum and the Forum!!! What a sin! The Colosseum is truly up on the list of my favorite things I have seen on my trip. From the outside it is still a daunting building...bold, brash and in your face...type thing...but then you go inside and see where thousands of men and animals were killed at one point in history...I was floored. It is quite well maintained for being soooooooooooooo ancient and it flocked by thousands of tourists daily. But I can see why! The Roman Forum is where the ancient Romans lived their day to day life. Ruin after ruin after oops another ruin. And once again thousands of tourists...but you can see why after walking through the area.
Now---not too mentioned all of the ancient churches, fountains, piazzas, and even the modern shopping district...Rome has soooo much and more to offer.
Food---mmmm mmmm mmmm. I cant wait to come back strictly for this alone.
Ahhhh----soooo off to London tomorrow morning to prep for India. Another adventure. After India this lil girl may have to get a job before her next tour of Italy!!! But we will see!!!
Oh yes, I am having nothing but trouble posting my pictures. When I am in London I am going to start a new page for just my pics alone. And I will let you all know what it is. This sight is not liking my loading style!!!!
