St Petersburg, Russia
The long way round on the road of meat...
Another sleeper train, another free brekkie (getting more sketchy now - didn't actually eat!) and another very long way round to the hostel. We seem to be having a consistent inability to compute maps - we of course call this "dodgy directions again!". This has gone up a notch in Russia due to the fact that we can't read a single thing due to this pesky cyrillic they insist on using here
Again we took in some beautiful churches and museums including all the usual sights (Hermitage, Kazan cathedral etc). The Hermitage was humungous - now we know where 1/2 the worlds prized booty is stashed!St Petersburg, being built around a canal system, is truly stunning and is very European in character. We also managed to have our first experience of meaty treats - ham and beef. Luckily our veggie radars were well tuned at the time and we dealt with the intrusion with composure and flair
Other St Petersburg experiences include being kept awake all night by a horde of snoring Brazilians, finding a secret bathroom, going on a boat tour where the highlight was a burning building, visiting the Zoology Museum which featured a Live Insect Zoo and a very old mammoth skin as well as every stuffed animal, bird and insect known to man and also meeting some folks that we will probably see more of as we are all going the same way including a sweet Irish couple and a girl called Tree (yes Tree).
