Saturday - Ending the Conference

Where did this week go??? Sorry I haven't been in touch, but we have been very busy. Every time I had a minute to get the internet cafe there was either a black out (we lost all power) or the internet was down. So I apologize for being lax on my entries and emails. I am writing this from my laptop on my balcony at the Arusha Hotel in Tanzania. Today we finished our Leadership Training Conference and tomorrow will be my first day to actually go out and SEE some of Arusha. I have been in the hotel, conference hall, or at the Miracle Corners Center in Arusha, seeing little of the country elsewhere. Anyway, things went very well this week. I feel like everyone got a sense of what some of the major problems in our centers are (communication between team members, lack of proper facilities maintenance, not enough community support, etc) and we were able to discuss a lot what some of the solutions would be. Each center is very different, with unique issues at play, but this conference was the first time all the different MCW team members from Tanzania's two centers (Arusha and Songea), Sierra Leone, and Rwanda were able to get together to discuss and share out experiences, conflicts and sucesses. It was a phenomenal week, ending today with a short "graduation" where everyone received a certificate from Educo (the leadership conference facilitators) stating that they had completed a full course in leadership training. And we got tee shirts! hahaha... Anyway- things are good. I am feeling much more organized and forward thinking than I was in the beginning of the week. I was overwhelmed with many things, but mainly the language barrier. Half of our team members don't speak English, so we have a great translator... however, not being able to hold a steady conversation in English with other volunteers was hard. I am happy to say I have made several Swahili speaking friends with whom I feel a very strong connection, but will probably never have a direct conversation with. Its amazing how hands on activities, games and projects can bring people together regardless of age, language or gender. Some of the women from Songea, Tanzania have never left their villages, so coming to Arusha has been a new experience for them. I was really excited to meet them. The center in Songea is our first real rural center and its amazing how different the problems they face are than the ones we face in a more rural setting in Freetown or Arusha. For instance, they don't have the communication issues that we have because in such a small town, no one can really lie to eachother or be dishonest. They are a much more unified group than the other teams. We really got to learn a lot from eachother this week. Now that the conference is over I am looking forward to resting tomorrow, maybe going to the open-air market and saying goodbye to the Educo facilitators (who are really great guys from South Africa) as well as the other MCW team members. I will be flying to Rwanda on Monday with Alfie (the Field Work Director) to spend three weeks making a business/project plan for Freetown. Hopefully when I leave Kigali, Rwanda, I will have a good idea of exactly what I hope to accomplish in the next year with the Freetown Center and how I intend to do so. Deep breath :) Its been a hectic, emotional and exciting week for me.. and for everyone, I think. I hope the power goes on soon so I can actually get on the internet... so until next time.. I love you all and will talk to you soon. Asante-sana (Swahili for Thank you so much) for all your support!!! xoxoxo -Amanda
