Thailand again

Sawadee ca again!

We've spent the last week in Thailand, in Chiang Mai, Sukhothai and Bangkok. We had a few nights in Chiang Mai, which were really nice, although we didn't explore much - we spent a night in a pub watching the FA cup final, another evening having a meal out and watching a band by the Ping River (cool name for a river!), and we also went shopping and to the cinema to see Spiderman 3. The only Thai thing that happened in Chiang Mai was us having to stand up to honour the King of Thailand in the cinema (no, he wasn't actually there, he was on the screen). The rest of the things we did we could have done just as well in England, but we needed to relax and just do normal things for a while. The guesthouse we stayed in was recommended by Lisa and Yan from the Gibbon Experience, and it was fantastic - brand new and very clean, with a lovely pool (we went for a swim each day).

Next, we went on a short 6 hour bus journey to Sukhothai, a city further south in Thailand. It used to be the Thai capital, and has lots of ancient ruins, a bit like Angkor. We spent a day there, riding around the Historical Park on bicycles. It was very beautiful, and the old wats were quite eerie, as there are many huge buddas everywhere. We also went to the museum on the site, which houses artefacts they've collected from the ruins. It was a lovely day and we took some great photos.

After two nights in Sukhothai we took another bus, this time for 7 hours to Bangkok. It was a bit strange going to Bangkok because we were here only two months ago, so it felt very familiar to us. We booked in to a nice hotel (a proper hotel!), which cost us a fortune (well, a fortune by our standards anyway), and we've mostly been relaxing (again!) over the last two days. We've both had bad colds, so we're trying to get over them as soon as possible. Today we went to the National Museum, we didn't visit it last time, so it was nice to have a chance to see it.

Tomorrow morning we fly to Tokyo for 5 days. We're very excited. We're booked in to the Hilton for the first night (it's near the airport and we arrive late), then we stay in the Shinjuku area for the next 4 nights. I can't wait! Andrew bought guidebooks for Tokyo and China today, so I've been reading them and planning our itinery.

So now it's goodbye to South East Asia and hello Japan - only 4 weeks left of our trip!

Love to everyone at home, we'll see you all soon,
Joanne xxxx
