Ko Lanta, Thailand

Make like a broccoli...and veg

Never tell a Thai taxi driver you are in a rush. You are sure to meet an untimely end.

We had very little time between our flight arriving and our train leaving but our maniac driver made sure we had a good 1/2 hour by the time we got there as he had almost managed to get us there before we left!. Happy to be alive we hopped on our train down South and apart from being served beer by a she boy it was rather uneventful.

You buy these tickets to get you places in Thailand and they open you to the world of being herded into various chains of ferrys, buses, waiting areas, trains and so on with your chest advertising your destination via a colour coded sticker along with all the other farangs. Eventually you get to your destination (Andrew counted 9 changes of transport on this one). Never in the advertised way or at the correct time - but you do get there.

Ko Lanta is a picture perfect island where we spent a few days to discover another part of Thailand off the West coast before heading to the East coast where we will spend about 5 weeks.

Apart from a little struggle to find accomodation we settled in at Sunflower and enjoyed our days on the beach (apart from the jelly fish in the water). Spent Xmas Eve with our new found friends at the guest house at a big dinner and also had a Remembrance dinner for the tsunami on the 26th with them, letting off thai lanterns (see pic) at the end was very moving. The owners were very sweet and believed in doing everything as a community (not sure if they'll tire of this generosity as they had only been there for 2 1/2 mths!) and there was no charge for any of these events just a donation for tsunami affected fisherman.

We spent our last day on the island exploring on a scooter and after having the inevitable accident (minor cuts and bruises) we cruised around all day before landing up on a remote beach. No jellyfish. Bliss.

Off we go again but this time to stay in one spot for a while - Kho Phangan.
