London

Hey everyone!
As you know, we are stranded in London, although I am feeling much better. We have been here for two days, and already have see/done lots of things.
But first, a recap of the last few days in Rhodes, Greece.
After much convincing, Oren agreed to fly to Rhodes from Crete rather than take a ferry (although he was very happy with his decision later, seeing as the other ferry we took didn't go over so well with him). The flight was less than 1 hour, and then we were off to explore Rhodes. The main attraction in Rhodes is the old city, built sometime in the 12th-13th centuries by some knights. Nowadays, the main streets are VERY commercialized, and since all of the shops were selling things that we have already see in the rest of greece, it was not too exciting. Away from the busy streets though, the little winding alleyways were really quite nice, and the whole thing overall was pretty cool. We also saw the synagogue of rhodes, in an area of the old town known as the jewish quarter. The next day (friday), we returned there for services, although it was pretty small and most of the people there seemed to have been visitors rather than locals. The first night, we also went to this show caled 'light & sound'... we though that it was supposed to be about the history of the old town. It took place at night, in an area where you could see some of the towers of the old city. all it was was lights illuminating the towers in different ways, and voices (recorded, with pretty weird british accents) telling a story that was hard to understand and had very little to do with the actual history of Rhodes... it was like listening to a book on tape. At some point about 5 minutes into the show, I looked over at Oren, who was convoluting with laughter! I have vary rarely seen him laugh so hard. We left the show about 30 minutes into it (it was supposed to last 1 hour). More than half of the audience left, many of them even before we did. Oh well, at least it diodn't cost much (the student card really pays off!)

Our other days in Rhodes were spent at the beach. The beach near our hotel wasn't very nice (rocky, and with strong waves), but we cought a bus to a nearby town where the beaches were sandy and shallow. So that was our fun in the sun :)

So now, on to London:
We've managed to see a good amount of the main sites so far, mostly by walking around. So far, we've avoided getting hit by cars going the wrong way on the streets... although there were a few close misses! It's hard to know which direction to look, although many of hte crossing points do remind you to look right! We wondered how many people had to get hit by cars before they actually painted those on teh streets...
Anyways, the first day, everything was closed by the time we got in, but we walked around and saw Trafalgar square, the parliament & big ben, and buckingham palace. Yesterday, the morning was spent getting me to a doctor & figuring out things with insurances, etc (my flight back & our hotel will be paid... we're still waiting to figure out some of the details). In the afternoon, we went to the British museum, which was REALLY impressive (at least for me...although Oren thought the mummies were kinda cool) . We skipped the roman & greek collection, but didn't have time to see everything, so we will come back another day (it's a free museum). Afterwards, we went to the London Library, which has an exhibition of works such as the Magna Carta, original works by shakespeare, the original book of Alice in Wonderland, and letters from Newton, among others. Even Oren was interested in this one! Afterwards, we went to King's cross station, found platform 9 and 3/4, and I ran across to the hogwarts train. Then we walked around a bit more & ate some REALLY delicious Thai food.
Today, we went to the tower of London, had a guided visit given by a beefeater, and saw the royal jewels (no, not what some of you may be thinking...these are the crowns, etc. of the queen). We'll probably go out for fish & chips tonight, with a big pint of beer! (although not for me, I'm on antibiotics!).
That's it with us for now!
Love, Marina & Oren
