The Neverending weekend---Exhausting!
Our last night in Ios was quite the night to remember. After many days of Leanne and I trying with horrible success to budget this night we also blew it! First of all we met a very hilarious couple from England. They were an older couple---mid 50s and just sitting alone at the bar in where we had been staying. We invited them to sit with us just to meet some new faces. The first 1-2 hours everything was really fun. They were really lovely people BUT then the sauce hit them! It was a fun time but at that point it was time to let our new friends go and off to the next destination. There isnt much to say about IOS. I know that my blogs havent been the most descriptive but really when you are doing nothing there is nothing to say. IOS is made for tanning and partying. I even ventured in to the 'village' and I walked around for maybe 2 hours and I had seen the whole area and walked back 10km to where we were staying. However, the beaches were lovely and yes, the beaches were lovely!!! haha. Anywho---the one other interesting thing about this island are the night clubs. Which really are just like oversized bedrooms. They are sooooo tiny and sooooo many people are packed in to them. But it was a very good time and once again not a lot of sleep.
The next day when we went for our ferry once again Leanne and I were totally tired and had belly issues. It could have been due to our excessive lifestyle on good old IOS. Now, according to us we were riding in style. We had a whole long section of seats (with cushions) to sit and sleep on. After many ferry rides with less than disireable situations this one was the king of all rides. That is until Mr. Fun Ferry K*ller came around shouting in Greek and clapping his hands together. We had to wake up and move...grrrrr. THEN we decided that we would give up our lovely smaller seats for the open floor. We were having a fun time laughing at the gross food we had eaten and how we must make the transition to 'real backpackers' soon and out of the blue comes an angry french lady telling us how loud we are and it doesnt matter what we do now because she is already awake. Now, if it was 4 in the morning that would be a valid comment---it was 4 in the afternoon. There were children running around and screaming but yes, it was us that woke her up.
Anywho----at 9ish we arrived in Athens. Now, being the 'smart' girls we are we decide it is safer to take a cab at night then try to sort out the buses. (or maybe it is because we were tired and lazy!) We get in the cab and I repeatedly try and ask him---how much will this cost. He kept saying by meter by meter. Now, this meter was obviously juiced up because that baby was moving .20 Euro cents every 10 seconds. By the time we arrived both Leanne and I knew that we were being ripped off by the HUGE bill 25Euro. But what could we do---nothing. We were easy targets. Lesson of this ride: Dont walk up to a taxi with your lonely planet trying to pronounce the place you are going! Target! When we checked in I just asked for my own knowledge how much it actually should have cost 10Euro...yes 20CAD or 50CAD. Perfect! After a nice dinner we headed back to the room for some shut eye.
NOW, this is the day that Ashley and Leanne became official backpackers. We combed the streets and markets for hours for fruits, veggies, plastic containers---and anything we may need to make a meal. We decided that if we keep going at the rate we have been we will be home in a month! SOOOO, we ate all our meals from our purchased food yesterday and only hit the cafe to have some vino and people watch. Yes, we are quite impressed with ourselves. Up until now we have been eating out 3 times a day plus snacks. That adds up in a hurry. But we also decided that 'real backpackers' dont talk about it they just are it...so this is the last I will speak of the transition!
Today we tried to get up early---7am but couldnt move until more like 8:20ish. I tell you doing nothing and not working really has an effect on the internal clock and your ability to be productive. We are making our breakfast and then off to see the sites of Athens. We have to catch a train at 4:30 to Thesolonnika (I know I spelt that one wrong) and then off to Skopje in Macedonia!!!!!!!
SOOOOOO---until the next blog.
