Going to Coonoor

Day 15

Today was a fairly long drive to Coonoor in the Nilgiri Hills in Tamil Nadu. The views deteriorated as we left Kerala and so did the standard of driving. Every driver seems to believe that he has an automatic right to be in front of every other driver on the road and this leads to a number of hair raising overtaking moves accompanied by loud hooting from all parties.

Nevertheless we survived. We had a Thali lunch en route and the views improved as we climbed

towards Coonoor with acres of tea plantations in evidence. We arrived at our 'Hotel' in one piece just before 5pm. Our 'Hotel' is called Woodwall Garden and has a sign saying it is a non hotel whatever that means. Anyway it seems very pleasant. We have a large room with large en suite and overlooking garden and fields. It does have wifi (a little slow) so I am trying to do a bit of catching up.

Hotel description from the internet:

Two hours from Coimbatore, Wallwood – earlier known as Blair Atholl – in the heart of upper Coonoor, was built over a hundred years ago by a Scottish Major General, hailing from the village Blair Athol in Scotland (the Duke of Atholl still lives in Scotland in his own castle). Wallwood was later sold to a British couple after the First World War, who ran it as a boarding house for many years. It was purchased by Liptons before the Second World War and the house has remained in the hands of tea companies – currently with Matheson Bosanquet. The Mansion has retained the atmosphere of the past when tea estates had their own lifestyle! It has its own prize-winning garden of the Nilgiris overlooking a unique pomological garden. It is located two minutes from Sim’s Park, one of India’s most luxuriant Botanical Gardens, laid out in 1874 with over 1200 species of plants and many old rare trees like the Rudraksh, Paperwood, Elephant Leg, Strawberry Tree etc. Savour the wildlife sanctuaries of Ooty, Pykara, Kotagiri & Bandipur, driving through the lush tea plantations of the Nilgiris.
