Quick update. Everything is going well and thanks for all your prayers during elections. There was some chaos downtown yesterday so school has been cancelled for the next two days, but it's just small stuff. Evidentially there was some obvious fraud by the NRM so they're delaying mayoral elections. I was in town last night (for an amazing two and a half hour worship service) and everything was calm.
We went to the beach on Lake Victoria yesterday thinking it would be a good way to spend our last day of break. It was still a good way to spend the day, it just wasn't the last day of break. We took a bought ride to an island, played Frisbee, and ate lunch there. A few of them go the traditional whole fish meal and decided to eat the eyeballs . . .that was definitely a highlight. What wasn't a highlight was that I got a haircut a couple days ago and forgot that my forehead and ears haven't seen sun in ten years . . . I'm a little burnt.
It's funny how Ugandans, and I assume Africans as a whole, think that white people all look the same. Now that I cut my hair I've been told I look like several famous people-Brad Pitt, Owen Wilson, and Angelina Jolie are a few. So the Angelina Jolie part isn't true, but it'd be funny if it was.
The week has been extremely uneventful. I've been spending my days at school, meeting for Calvary, or hanging out with the Jess, Kris, Terri, and Karli around Kansanga. Our first sports day is going to be this Saturday so I'm praying that goes well. I'm enjoying it more and more at Calvary and getting to know more people. I was given an usher name tag last Sunday and wore it proudly as I greeted people with "Good morning, how are you" as they came in the door. I was pretty embarrassed when I realized it was the 12:30 service.
I did go to my first true African birthday party last week. A couple of girls from Calvary invited me (they're twins). It was interesting and fun, but not really that different from any other birthday party I've been to. The games were different, the food was African and the cake was . . . more like bread.
We also successfully hosted for the girls last week. All went well despite Enrico's claims that we were going to "destroy the girls" and that his pasta "was like glue and they'll never be able to open their mouths." We never did figure out what he meant by destroying the girls, but it was hilarious.
My longing to fish led me to the fish market a few days ago. I wanted to just go out in a boat with someone and watch what they do, but all the fishermen had already went out for the evening. Someone said they stayed out all night and someone else said they go out early in the morning. The language barrier is rough. I talked in circles with a one-eyed man named paradise for about half an hour. In the beginning of the conversation he was a fisherman with a boat. By the end of the thirty minutes he had no boat, no fishing gear and wasn't a fisherman . . . but he could find some for some cash. I gave up and went home. I'll go back sometime super early in the morning.
I hope all is well with you and yours. I enjoy updates from everyone whenever I can get them. Thanks for prayers. Grace and peace.
