Roraima Day 3 - The climb!!

We climbed up for an hour and a half to get to the base of the mountain. The first part was amazingly steep and we were all wondering how on earth we would get back down this was on the way back, Eventually we reached the rock face which towered above us. We were already quite tired by this point and slightly daunted that the hardest part of the climb was still ahead of us. As we started climbing we had amazing views with the forest beneath us and the massive cliff face stretching into the distance. After lots of scrambling over boulders and roots and 3hrs 2mins of relentless climbing from the base camp we reached the top of Roraima. We were the first of our group up there - we really had to push ourselves as the other members of the group also seemed to want to get there first. While we waited for the rest of the group we pretty much had the top of Roraima to ourselves as we knew that there were no other groups up there at that point. The views and plants were really amazing up there. Once the rest of the group were up we were shown to our camp which we were surprised to find was a smallish ledge on the side of a rock. The guides call them hotels but the space only just held our four tents with no space to move around… it was also rather dangerous to walk around in the dark or after some run that we all took up there! After lunch our guide took us for a bath in the Jacuzzi pools which were actually freezing, but after the climb it was very welcome. We spent a while there and wondered round a bit - then back to the tents to get ready for the night. Once the sun set about 5.45 there really wasnt too much to do as it would be too dangerous to walk around. We entertained ourselves drinking rum and hot chocolate and watched out for more spiders - James had removed on that looked rather too like a baby tarantula for our liking!! We were worried its family might be close by. We were all tucked up in bed by about 8.
