Roraima Day 6 - Evading Death on the Gran Savana!!
We had expected the 3hr walk on the last day to be really easy after all the uphill walking we had been doing… but due to scorching weather and tired legs it was actually quite a strain. While walking along the path I almost trod on a snake which was about a meter long. I screamed and jumped away while it stared at us!! One of our porters was walking behind us and ran to have a look. Apparently it was a poisoness Mapanare snake which could either really hurt or kill you depending on the amount of venom it managed to get into you. He used stones to get the snake well away from the path so that it couldn't get anyone else. After this encounter the rest of the walk was a little more nerve wracking for fear of meeting another one - we were glad that we hadn't seen it on the first day of the tour as we hav been wading knee high through grasses most of the time. When we finally reached the finish point (and after getting slightly lost as our guide didn't seem to like guiding us and always took up the rear out of sight) we were greeted with ice cold beers and coke which was great. The trip really had been excellent and we would recommend people to do it if they come to south America.
